The Livingstone Mountains are located in the Mybeya region, which has proven ripe territory for growing high-quality coffee, mostly by small cooperatives. The coffee itself grows at around 1,500 meters above sea level and is a single varietal Bourbon hybrid.

The town of Paez, named after the indigenous population of the region, is located in the Cauca district about 130km from the town of Popayan, where coffee is taken for milling. The people in Paez are farmers, growing not only coffee, but also beans, potatoes, corn, blackberries and other food. These are mainly smallholder farms with an average size of 3 hectares. This lot comes from the second harvest of the year and provides an exceptional example of a small-lot Colombian coffee.

Coffee from Harrar, which is near the epicenter of where coffee trees originated, is typically sun dried with some of the fruit left on the beans. This imparts a uinque jammy essence to the flavor of the beans that is highly valued among connoisseurs.

This coffee is from the Santa Anita Estate located in Naranjo County in the West Valley Region of Tarrazu, where much of Costa Rica’s highest quality coffees are cultivated. The trees grow in volcanic soil on this family owned farm, which is also Rainforest Alliance Certified.

This coffee is from the SOPROCOPIV cooperative (Solidarite pour la Production et la Commerciaistation des Produits Industriels et Vivriers). About 900 farmers comprise the coop, most in the North Kivu region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

From our importer: “Coffee from the DRC hasn’t had the best reputation in terms of quality. We believe we have found some really nice gems though. We have found that the Lake Kivu region can produce really stellar cups due to its altitude and varieties if proper care is taken during the harvest and processing.”

We have been assessing this coffee each year following the harvest and have seen steady improvement. Previous crops were good enough to be part of a blend, while this year’s crop stands on its own. We have never tasted a coffee quite like this.

Reusable Nylon Filter for Hario V60 and Beyond

Manufactured for us, we find that these food-grade nylon cone filters allow more of the coffee oils to pass through to the cup while still filtering out any fine particles. We designed them for the Hario V60s, but they are cone shaped and can be used with several other hand-pour devices. The material is durable enough to last hundreds of use (though care should be taken to preserve the seams to extend the life of the filters).

This coffee comes from the small farms in the Kochere region, which borders Yirgacheffe and Southern Oromia. The beans are carefully washed and then dried in the sun at the local Nardos mill.
